We Came First by Jennifer Wright

I have a confession to make. I would happily read Jennifer Wright's laundry lists. "It Ended Badly" and "Get Well Soon" are two of my favorite books. So when I had a chance to read historically based advice columns; I was here for it! The advice is sometimes questionable as are some historical figures (do not send your intended pubic hair, please and thank you.) The book is broken up into sections and at the end of each section is a women's magazine style quiz. I really enjoyed this book and I how you all read it.

Boricua Reads' Song Shuffle Tag #4

Alrighty, we have our Song which is Hands Around My Throat by Death in Vegas. Here we go! Hands The Dark and Hollow Places by Carrie Ryan I went with the series title for this one. I have not read this one. I don't even remember what it's about. Around Fooling Around by Francine Pascal I actually have not gotten to this one! I got to 30 something and I quit. Wish they were in ebook. My Will My Cat Eat My Eyeballs by Caitlin Doughty I cannot wait to read this one! Throat Throat Culture by Christopher Golden I love the Body of Evidence series so much. I wish it we're more well-known. Honestly, Jenna Blake is such a great character.
I feel like I haven't read that many books. I've read a good bit but not that many. So I think it's rather odd that people are so impressed with how many books I've read. There are people who have read 300 plus by now!

The Skeleton Stuffs a Stocking by Leigh Perry

Wow, I really loved this book. The publisher granted my wish on Netgalley so I felt extra special getting to read it! So, this series features an ambulatory Skelly friend that helps an English professor SOLVE CRIMES. Is that not one of the greatest premises ever? It's the 6th book in the series and I am shocked that I hadn't heard of the series before. So, this was an absolute blast to read as the main character, Georgia, has a great relationship with her family and is more than a little concerned when Byron (a dog, not the mopey poet) brings home a femur that it turns out does not belong to the family skellyfriend, Sid. (who totally sounds like Papyrus in my head.) Whose skeleton does it belong to is the question Georgia must answer.

Murder in the First Edition by Lauren Elliott

I really didn't care for the main character in this one. Yes, it's terribly sad that her fiance was murdered but she seemed to enjoy stringing people along instead of just saying she wasn't ready for the commitment. The mystery and the writing were excellent just a little more densely packed than I like in a cozy. I want 'em fluffy! So while this wasn't my cup of tea, I would definitely recommend this series to mystery buffs. Got this one from Netgalley and the publisher in exchange for my opinions.

Have Yourself a Beary Little Murder by Meg Macy

Unfortunately, this one didn't grab me the way I wanted to. But first let's admire the adorable cover and punny title. Okay, this one started out punny for me but petered out quickly after Bloom's body was found. The townspeople seemed to be made up of horrible natterers and the mc really had no involvement in the mystery except to be nosy! The resolution is...okay. it just seemed kind of obvious. Now, as u am not an author take these complaints with a grain of salt and one of the reasons I'm being so critical is this book had so much potential.

Carpet Diem by Misty Simon

Ooh, I had a blast with this one. Due to a bummer turn of events I read about a quarter of it in the hospital and it helped keep my mind off things. This is the fourth book in the series, which means our poor girl Tallie has stumbled on three corpses before. Also her last name is Graver and her parents run a funeral home and she divorced her high society husband and apparently society turned its back on her. Rude. So, Tallie has a small cleaning business and wants to clean the mansion of Mrs. Petrovski and I swear if this lady needs anything cleaned, it's her clock! Monstrous woman with an equally awful nephew named Preston. So after Preston sabotages Tallie she goes back to get her things and finds the body of Audra, a woman she was just starting to get to know and like. Only... It turns out that Audra may be a lying liar who lies but Tallie wants to catch the killer before they strike again. This book  was very enjoyable and I totally identified with Tallie's fe
I'm posting this on the 12th, I'm curious how many of these I'll get through when this is published! I'll update below! 09/22/2019

Sweet memories!

These are the first three books I reviewed for Netgalley. What were yours?

Boricua Reads' Song Shuffle Book Tag #3

Song was I Melt With You by Sugarcult. I decided to ditch the I after going through 35 book titles. I decided to go with author name on this one. BTVS: Twilight by Brad Meltzer Haven't read it. I honestly stopped reading around the time Dawnie turned into a centaur. Becoming Superman by J. Michael Straczynski Amazing memoir. This book really touched my heart and inspired me. You Owe Me a Murder by Eileen Cook. On my TBR pile!
I had to turn down an offer for a review and I feel so bad because the book sounds great but I have almost 20 Netgalley books to get through. I hate rejecting people, though!

The Gilded Wolves by Roshani Choksi

What to say about this wonderfully written book? Well, it was a bit confusing at first and I'm still not exactly sure what was going on with Laila BUT it has a canonically autistic character who actually has character development and is more than someone to be pitied! Woohoo! This representation means so much to me as a kid growing up with Rain Man and Kristy and the Secret of Susan. So, thieves band together to steal a...fragment of something so that an heir can be restored to hear s rightful place. Or not? This one was a fascinating character study even with an obvious Red Shirt. And I get to read the sequel! (Yup, I'm bragging😏)

Rejection

Ack. I was rejected for two Netgalley books and while I've gotten a huge amount there's a part of me that's like *sniff* "Why won't you let me love you?" I know, I know it's a ridiculous way to feel. Just thought I'd share.

Borderlands 3!

This is what I will be doing today. Amara.

Great casting!

https://comicbook.com/horror/2019/09/11/the-stand-alexander-skarsgard-randall-flagg-cbs-miniseries/ I've always hated the Jamey Sheridan in the miniseries. He just was not menacing. I know that Flagg was supposed to look like he was in his 50's but I'd totally trade that for menacing!
Have you ever been this mad at a book's ending?

Boricua Reads’ Song Shuffle Book Tag #2

Where The Wounds Are By Hannah Fury Books: Where I End and You Begin by Preston Norton Read for Netgalley. It was a really fun body swap romp that could have been terrible but turned out wonderfully. Black Volume of the Dead by Cassandra Clare Third in The Eldest Curses series. Coming in 2021 Self-Inflicted Wounds by Aisha Tyler Read it. I really enjoyed it. Here There are Monsters by Amelinda Bérubé On my TBR. I was declined a copy by Netgalley but I can't wait to read it!

Woohoo!

This is from one of my all time favorite kids series. I just loved that fact that Jupe made Alfred Hitchcock so mad. I'm thinking of covering The Three Investigators for the blog. The series just doesn't get enough live for my liking!

Book Reader Problems Book Tag

1. You have 20,000 books in your TBR, how in the world do you decide what to read next? Alphabetical order or release date if it's a stand alone. 2. You’re halfway through a book and you’re just not loving it. Do you put it down or are you committed? I dnf at 10% 3. The end of the year is coming and you’re behind on your reading challenge, do you try to catch up? And if so, how? Try to catch up 4. The covers of a series you love do not match, how do you cope? Scream into the void. Seriously, I'm so mad about the Mortal Instruments covers. 5. Everyone and their mother loves a book that you do not. Who do you bond with over your shared feelings? It's okay. You can say Ready Player One. I sulk. A LOT.  6. You’re reading a book in public and you’re about to start crying. How do you deal?  I don't and I just sit there sobbing like a dingus. 7. The sequel to a book you loved just came out but you’ve forgotten a lot of what happens. A

Little White Lies by Jennifer Lynn Barnes

This book has a heist in it. Intrigued? Yeah, me too. I love a good heist. Let's face it, all heists are good heists. The characters are great and that twist at the end? Whew! I really liked Sawyer and the way she dealt with things. If a long-lost relative asked for 9 months of your time in exchange for half a mile, would you take the deal

A Galaxy in my Mind by Ionel Rusanu

Wow, I really loved this book. It starts of on an ordinary day on an alien mind controlled Earth when Ava Johnson's clone dies in front of her. Ava discovers that she's a genetically engineered alien/human hybrid designed to fight the invading aliens. Klarion is an Arcon who wants to move up in the ranks and tries to trick Ava into spilling secrets about the resistance. The more time he spends with Ava the deeper his feelings grow. This was such a great sci-fi romp! This book was provided to me by BookSirens in exchange for an honest review.

Boricua Reads’ Song Shuffle Book Tag

The OP is  here. Here are the rules to the book tag: Put your playlist or music library on shuffle.  You must build a book list (can be read or in your TBR) out of the words in the title of the song that comes up.  Song must have more than two words in the title.  You can use more than one song if you so want.  If you can’t find a book in your shelves with one of the song title’s words, you can choose a book that has a letter starting with that word or the word can sound similar/be part of the one in the song title.  5. Then proceed to talk about the books in the list, your thoughts or opinions on it and whether it’s on your TBR or you’ve already read it.  So, we have the song: Blood in my Eyes by Atari Teenage Riot Books: Fire & Blood by George RR Martin Read this one. I really enjoyed the Targ history but I really want to know more about those death worms! Buried in the Stacks by Allison Brook Read this one from Netgalley. I really liked Carr

For the TBR!

Look what comes out today!

This one was a Netgalley wish and I loved this book so much! I can't wait to read the first one, Sky in the Deep! I really loved this one! It's got family drama with a bit of a mystery! Alaine is a wonderful character! Say, what if what's his face had actually had the authority to crown George Washington? This book deals with the idea of a modern royal family. Good stuff!

That moment when

One of your favorite authors follows you on Twitter.
Why is the third Lazarus book so expensive? I got the first two for about five bucks each!
Got my first BookSirens book! I'm so excited for this opportunity!
